A non-profit called People’s Grocery in West Oakland, California is running an urban community farm. One of the stated purposes is for ‘food justice’. We don’t what that means, but, we’d rather focus on ‘food independence’, which is what this urban gardening project is creating:
John from http://www.growingyourgreens.com/ goes on a field trip to West Oakland to show you how the non-profit People’s Grocery is building the health of the community by growing an urban garden. In this episode John will share with you raised beds growing over concrete sidewalks, an aquaponic system that uses fish waste to feed edible vegetables and a unique food forest garden that feeds the residents of West Oakland. In addition you will learn about some unique perennial crops that are being grown in this urban garden that would be perfect to grow in the Bay Area and other frost-free gardens around the world.ADVERTISEMENT
