Coming on the heels of reports that US forces are being trained for deployment to Egypt to help with riot control, this latest news report about America’s Ambassador to Egypt scolding protestors has many wondering if the US is pursuing a pro-Islamist agenda.
Protests against what some Egyptians see as the steady Islamization of Egypt are scheduled for June 30, but the US is hearing none of it.
US Ambassador Anne Patterson responed to the planned protests.
“Some say that street action will produce better results than elections. To be honest, my government and I are deeply sceptical,” she said during a speech, continuing, “We oppose chaos. Chaos is a breeding ground for instability.
She also offered official advice from the US government, “I recommend Egyptians get organised. Join or start a political party that reflects your values and aspirations.”
This kind of restraint was not urged on any Islamist uprising and many moderate Arab governments who face potential radical Islamist uprisings take note of the apparent double standard. Uprisings against Islamization have also taken place in Turkey, with the US offering little support to the protestors.
Opposition forces against the Islamist regime of Morsi, who heads the radical Muslim Brotherhood, are furious at the US statement which appears to them to align the US with the forces of despotism, even as it was perceived that the US was aligned with the despotic regime of Hosni Mubarak in the past.
